LASIK: What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a widely used vision-correction procedure designed to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses. At San Marino Optometry, we partner with refractive surgeons to provide thorough pre- and post-operative care so you can feel confident throughout your LASIK journey.

Before Surgery: Evaluation and Preparation

The first step in your LASIK process begins with a comprehensive consultation at our office. During this visit, our doctors will:

· Assess whether LASIK is right for you by conducting a detailed eye-health and vision exam.

· Review your general health, vision history, and specific lifestyle needs.

· Discuss what LASIK can realistically achieve and what outcomes to expect.

Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK, so it’s important to understand the qualifying factors and have realistic expectations. You may be asked to temporarily discontinue contact lens wear before certain exams so that measurements of your cornea and vision are accurate.

Preparing mentally and physically for surgery also includes following your surgeon’s specific instructions, which might involve stopping certain medications or avoiding eye makeup on the day of your procedure.

During Surgery: What Happens

On the day of the procedure, LASIK typically takes only a short time, and you will be awake for the surgery. The surgeon creates a very thin flap in the cornea and uses a laser to reshape underlying tissues to correct your vision. Many patients are surprised at how quickly the process goes and often find it less intimidating than they anticipated.

Because the procedure is minimally invasive, recovery starts almost immediately. You’ll rest for a short period afterward and are usually able to go home the same day. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions about immediate post-procedure care.

After Surgery: Healing and Follow-Up

Healing begins right away, but full recovery takes time. Your vision may be noticeably better within a day or two, yet it can take several weeks to months for vision to stabilize completely. During this time, some patients experience temporary visual disturbances like glare, halos around lights, or fluctuating vision.

Important Recovery Tips:

· Avoid rubbing your eyes and follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding activities like swimming, strenuous exercise, and wearing eye makeup.

· Use prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation.

· Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect from UV light and reduce glare.
